Behind

So, i allowed my posts to get so far behind that I was overwhelmed by the idea of posting in real time. But I'm not letting that happen anymore!

Relevant events: First daffodils bloomed today (it was over 70 degrees for a while) April 10. (Last year it happened on April 1).

Seeds planted three weeks ago; sprouted about 10 days ago.

It's been really cold this winter, or at least it feels that way to me.

Later (really!).

Sprouts!

Turnips and radishes planted last week have sprouted! There's a frost warning for tonight, though. Being so close to the Lake, we expect to be spared, but I'll be a little worried anyway.

But: FROST WARNING IN MAY???

General notes

1) We started our seedlings a little later than last year, they are looking good. Probably transplanting tomatoes outside in the next week.

2) Bed of lettuce and peas has been out for three weeks. We had them covered by a cold frame, which saved them for last week's late frost. But now they are free and exposed.

3) Yesterday (May 1) we planted peas and sweet peas near the trellises on the side of the house; radishes, kale, carrots and beets in the regular garden; and turnips in the new raised bed (filled with compost) we can't get turnips to grow in the regular garden, so we're hoping the raised bed is the trick. Last night it rained steadily for several hours, so if it is warm this week, those seeds will be popping!

No Foolin'!

Beautiful daffodils on April 1. Spring is finally here! (and no big snowstorm in March!)

Bowl of Sunshine

We still had a few winter squash up in the attic, so on Saturday, I baked all of them and made them into a delicious soup. Also included were frozen corn and edamame from last summer, and fresh red and orange peppers we purchased. The squash were the last of the "fresh" produce from last year--still a lot of canned and frozen stuff to eat before the garden starts producing in a few months.

August in a Bag

Tonight for dinner I thawed out some grilled vegetables from August. Onions, snow peas, broccoli, turnip, beets, carrots. It was amazing. It did take me back to summer on the deck. You can't get that grilled taste when you cook indoors. This will have to be a new summer staple. Grill all the vegetables and freeze the extras.

Final Harvest?

One more generous harvest of raspberries. And some potatoes that I didn't even know were out there!
